Rum, Sodomy and The Lash is widely regarded as being the band’s best work, with If I Should Fall From Grace With God being the only other album by the band that even comes close. The first crucial thing to note about the album is the quality of MacGowan’s songwriting on it. Although 6 out of the 12 songs are either written by contemporary artists or taken from traditional Irish music, songs such as the frenzied The Sick Bed of Cuchulainn feature the band at their very best, bringing the smoke-filled atmosphere of the Irish pubs of the past straight out of your speakers. While the opening track sees The Pogues in fighting mood, however, it would be completely wrong to say that it epitomises the album. A Pair of Brown Eyes is comfortably one of the most famous songs that the band have ever made, and sees MacGowan crooning in a way that is more reminiscent of Tom Waits than anyone else.

Rum Sodomy & the Lash is the second album by the Anglo-Irish musical group The Pogues, released in 1985. The title is taken from a quote often attributed ("Don't talk to me about naval tradition. It's nothing but rum, sodomy, and the lash. The cover artwork is based on The Raft of the Medusa, a painting by Théodore Géricault, with the band members' faces replacing those of the men on the raft. In August 1985, the album was launched on HMS Belfast – and one.

This album is a joy from start to finish. I was a big fan of the Irish Rovers when I was a little kid (the Unicorn Song, to die for) and discovering this as an adult almost made me die of happiness...It is a balls-out, drunken, two-fisted fucker of an album. Excellent production values enhance this collection of punk-folk songs. If you don't have this album, your life is not complete. "Dirty Old Town" the way it SHOULD sound!, "The Band Played Waltzing Matilda" with the necessary pathos, and when you listen to "The Old Main Drag" with its droning hurdy gurdy you can almost smell the stale urine, spilt drinks and used condoms, and hear the crunching of stilettos on used needles. "A Man You Don't Meet Every Day" subverted brilliantly when sung by a very sexy, velvety female voice. "The Wild Cats of Kilkenny" will make your hair stand on end if you play it loud enough, (I use it as my alarm clock sound, very effective).Every song is great, fresh and sounds like it is EXACTLY the way the song should be. PS- I believe that "pogue" is Irish for "arsehole".

You're close. "Pogue" is the English rendering of the Irish, "póg", which means "kiss". The band's original name was "Pogue Mahone", which was the English rendering of the Irish, "Póg mo Thóin" Irish for "kiss my arse".
