Berlin-based artist Stefan Goldmann will release a vinyl double-pack called The Grand Hemiola at the end of March. Half of the album is an experiment in locked grooves and polyrhythm: one record is packed with loops in a 4/4 time signature, the other with loops in 3/4. This makes for some interesting possibilities behind the decks. Frankly it's all a bit over our heads, but a press release explains it like this: "In the mix, they sum up to an extended cycle of 3x 4/4 or 4x 3/4, and enable building complex '3 over 4' polyrhythms ('Hemiolas'). You can mix loop into.

Berlin type Stefan Goldmann takes it to the extreme on his latest opus, The Grand Hemiola, which offers up a bewildering 144 locked grooves across a variety of polyrhythms. Needless to say it's all a bit too high concept for us to attempt an explanation but the possibilities seem very interesting. Goldmann deems to include six traditional album cuts as well which tend to congregate around the more abstract corners of the techno spectrum. Played by. Manu Archeo.
Stefan Goldmann’s first ever double vinyl album is a take on the infinite possibilities of rhythmic layering. Percussion-heavy, focussed on clashing metres, deeply exploring the sound set – from the orchestral Grand Hemiola, to the triplet-feel of Megi’s Waltz, from the 11/8 pattern of Double Hendecagon to the anti-loops of Away From The Flock : A unique, non-conformist album of haunted acoustics, haptic percussion and deep rhythmic expression.
