Alexander Lonquich - Robert Schumann / Heinz Holliger - Kreisleriana / Partita album download

Robert Schumann Kreisleriana (Erstausgabe, 1838) Fantasien für Piano-Forte Opus 16. Heinz Holliger Partita (1999) für András Schiff. Recorded November 2008 Auditorio Radio Svizzera, Lugano. An ECM Production In collaboration with RSI Rete Due, Lugano.

The Partita of Swiss composer Heinz Holliger (better known as an oboist) does indeed make reference to Schumann, among other composers: two of the work's movements are entitled "Sphynxen for Sc. " and a third, "Barcarola," seems loosely inspired by the dedicatee of Schumann's Kreisleriana, Fryderyk Chopin.

On Robert Schumann, Heinz Hollinger, Lonquich splits the difference between Schumann's eight-movement Kreisleriana (Op. 16, 1838), and Swiss oboist/composer Holliger's seven-movement Partita (1999). This match is a typical stylistic and chronological mash-up of the ECM Records zeitgeist. Lonquich's Schumann is well-measured, with the Romantic ethos typified by the composer during the early part of his composing career. Schumann's angst toward the keyboard's limitations remained spiritually vibrant, finding its way into Heniz Holliger's 1999 Partita (dedicated to pianist Andras Schiff). Hollinger immediately dispenses with Schumann's Romantic consonance in favor of a more modern approach, owing more to Cecil Taylor than Bill Evans. The Partita is abrupt, and often near angry in its thundering pronouncements.

Pianist Alexander Lonquich delighted many with his first ECM solo recording, the 2005-released Plainte Calme, a recital of Fauré, Messiaen and Ravel. Now he returns to territory with which he is most closely associated, the German musical tradition exemplified by Robert Schumann. His Partita is an imaginative continuation of the Schumann style, a compositional explosion bringing the mercurial spirit of Schumann into the modern age. Alexander Lonquich was born in Trier, Germany. In 1976, at the age of 16, he caused a sensation winning Italy’s Casagrande Competition. Heinz Holliger is one of the defining composers and instrumentalists of ECM New Series.

The relationship between Heinz Holliger and Robert Schumann has already been explored on the ECM label in their Romancendres CD. The connection is perhaps less well defined in this case, though Holliger’s Partita is involved with the ‘Sphynxes’ of Schumann’s Carnaval in its fourth and sixth movements. Some of the details of the changes between each version are outlined by Lonquich in the booklet, but ultimately his choice is a trade-off between the ‘more.
