Crazy Horse is the debut album by Crazy Horse, released in 1971 by Reprise Records. It is the only album by the band to feature Danny Whitten, and it peaked at on the Billboard 200 album chart. Members of this band had already released an album in 1968 as The Rockets, and had appeared on record twice with Neil Young as Crazy Horse
Since Crazy Horse first came to public attention as the backing band for Neil Young in concert and on his albums Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere and After the Gold Rush, it makes sense to expect that the band on its own would play something similar to the hard guitar rock and country-rock heard on those albums, albeit without Young's distinctively. quirky singing and songwriting, and that is what one hears to a large extent on the debut album Crazy Horse.
Album · 1970 · 11 Songs. On 1970's After the Gold Rush, he combines these personas into a compelling whole. Supported by the rough-hewn prowess of Crazy Horse, Young fills these tracks with wistful melancholy and moral outrage. His lyrics embrace sci-fi scenarios ("After the Gold Rush"), narrate cryptic nightmares ("Don't Let It Bring You Down"), and confront smoldering injustices ("Southern Man") with equal conviction.

There, the new Crazy Horse got to know each other over some hastily written material, simplified to work with Poncho’s rudimentary guitar. This lackadaisical formula explains the uneven nature of Zuma, which is equally filled with classics and duds. The album’s two other highlights revive a breezy, poppy Young that had been missing since After the Gold Rush. Don’t Cry No Tears, is simple twangy country-rock well in the Horse’s wheelhouse, gilded with innocent backing harmonies.
