He had been inspired by an offbeat instrumental called "Moondog Symphony" that had been recorded by New York street musician Louis T. Hardin, aka "Moondog". Freed adopted the record as his show's theme music. Crowds attended in numbers far beyond the arena's capacity, and the concert was shut down early due to overcrowding and a near-riot. Freed gained a priceless notoriety from the incident In those days, Cleveland was considered by the music industry to be a "breakout" city, where national trends first appeared in a regional market.

This included two "minisyms" (Moondog's term for short symphonic-styled works performed by small orchestras); two canons; a chaconne in memory of Charlie Parker; ballet music originally written for Martha Graham ("Witch of Endor"); and three symphonic (or "symphonique") works, one of which was dedicated to Benny Goodman and featured elements of swing The album has been re-released twice as a 2-for-1 CD combining.
For over 30 years he stood, in viking garb, on the corner of Manhattan’s 6th Avenue and 54th street. A totemic guardian planted firmly in the midtown throng, he kept a blind watch over the many vices of the big smoke, selling poetry and playing home-made instruments. Surrounded by high profile admirers he released countless records and starred in feature films. He was Moondog, the most unique artist of his generation.
The first LP, Moondog, features Moondog jamming with some of the top-flight studio musicians in New York on his own charts in an ambitiously scored bag reminiscent of a forgotten Epic LP from the '50s, Moondog and His Friends - difficult to reissue as, like its successors, it's really, really short. These are performed by a small group led by Hardin and. One aspect of Hardin's work for CBS that is intriguing is how well he and Guercio utilized the resources on hand at Columbia and how the Moondog fit into the CBS of the time.
