Mandinka" is a song by Sinéad O'Connor from her 1987 album The Lion and the Cobra. O'Connor drew inspiration from diverse sources, including her Irish heritage, Leonard Cohen, punk rock, and hip-hop. In an April 1988 interview with The Tech, O'Connor said: "Mandinkas are an African tribe. They're mentioned in a book called Roots by Alex Haley, which is what the song is about.

The album featured prominent session musicians John Reynolds on drums, former Adam and the Ants and Siouxsie and the Banshees guitarist Marco Pirroni, former Japan guitarist Rob Dean and Mike Clowes from Friction Groove on keyboards. The first single "Troy" peaked at in The Netherlands and in Belgium. The second single was "Mandinka", the video for which was shown heavily after debuting on MTV's 120 Minutes. The single was a mainstream Pop hit in the UK, peaking at in the singles chart, as well as in her native Ireland.

Throughout the album, you can hear O'Connor's love for Siouxsie & The Banshees, Peter Gabriel and Prince (whose song "Nothing Compares 2 U" would become her biggest hit in 1990) bleeding into one another as the singer wields the full power of her voice, a soft-loud dynamic that reaches its crescendo on the album's six-minute centerpiece and first single. Indeed, Sinead is more lion than cobra, a powerful and emotional creature unafraid of expressing her pain in the public arena if it gives a voice to the voiceless. It can only be hoped that she transforms this temporary setback into a proper comeback that evokes the power of her best work, such as her Grammy-nominated debut.

It conveys a remarkable impression of crystal-clear, unbending purity. Sure, she strains her voice, she yelps and howls and sounds off-key fairly often (the outro in "Never Get Old"). Other times, her voice sounds beautiful, clear and strong. Either way, it is always an intense experience. The centerpiece of the album is "Troy," a long monologue from the point of view of a woman who was wronged by her irresponsible lover. The lyrics are in free verse, with no meter.
