Labeling The Slits groundbreaking just doesn’t (pardon the pun) cut it. No other post-punk band was as confrontational-an all-female trio calling themselves The Slits and posing muddily topless on their debut album cover was about as in-your-face as a feminist statement gets - or as determinedly uncommercial. Indeed, after being dropped by their label, Island, despite having made Cut, of the signature albums of the era, Viv Albertine, Tessa Pollitt, and Ari Up treated Sony, their new label, to an even more radical record, 1981’s Return of the Giant Slits.

The slits weren't really a punk band as people have type cast them but rather a progressive band with punk origins. This album is a work of art and possibly a too radical departure for some but I'm pretty sure if they had stayed together the music would have continued further down the rabbit hole and the next album would have surely been different also. This album is not a collection of love songs in 4/4 time with familiar sounds but rather a primal sounding trip. The theme more about life being an animal here on earth than about love and breakups etc. The whole album has a mystical. It's more African influenced rhythmicly than Cut, and with the highly idiosyncratic vocalisms that are a Slits trademark.

by CBS for an ultra rare promo-only release. Originally released in 1981, this reissue features new graphic artwork and two of the classic photos by Anton Corbijn from the NME magazine cover session. This record has often been overshadowed by the more controversial 1979 Cut album. It represents their natural development as artistes by focusing more on their interests in dub and world music that was well suited to their, by then, more accomplished playing style. Produced by Dennis Bovell and Dick O'Dell (Y Records).

Bonus tracks are great, but the packaging has no release information/booklet, only 2 photos. Where are the expanded features that this release deserves?
