A soundtrack album is any album that incorporates music directly recorded from the soundtrack of a particular feature film or television show. The first such album to be commercially released was Walt Disney's Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, the soundtrack to the film of the same name, in 1938. The first soundtrack album of a film's orchestral score was that for Alexander Korda's 1942 film Jungle Book, composed by Miklós Rózsa.

I have seen Robert Altman's great movie 5 or 6 times and enjoyed it - and admired it - more each time. It was fortunate that I copied the vinyl LP I bought because it got smashed.

USA. Directed by Robert Altman. 116 min. Screenplay Frank Barhydt, Altman. With Jennifer Jason Leigh, Miranda Richardson, Harry Belafonte, Steve Buscemi. Inspired by 1930s gangster films and Altman’s childhood memories of Kansas City, this jazz-infused crime drama is centered on the kidnapping of a politically connected socialite and the dangerous negotiations with a black mob leader that follow. 35mm print courtesy the Robert Altman Collection at the UCLA Film & Television Archive. Directed by Robert Altman. With Jennifer Jason Leigh, Miranda Richardson, Harry Belafonte, Michael Murphy. A pair of kidnappings expose the complex power dynamics within the corrupt and unpredictable workings of 1930s Kansas City. Director: Robert Altman. Writers: Robert Altman, Frank Barhydt.
The songs move at a pretty, slow place, and the opening track sees Cooder plucking his guitar's strings and letting that sound vibrate into thin air; it's a motif that he returns to repeatedly throughout the score. I Knew These People" begins with an extended segment of dialogue from the film before Cooder's somber guitar creeps in. The effect of the dialogue makes the track a fine, artistic statement, but the moment works better in the context of the movie than as a track on an album. The dialogue comes from a scene where the characters played by Stanton and Nastassja Kinski have a particularly emotional meeting. The majority of the score is delicate and stunningly pretty.
Altman didn’t really make autobiographical films, because he was much more interested in observing other people than in talking about himself (as just about anyone who ever tried to interview him can attest). The picture actually made a lot of money, and has been increasingly appreciated over the years for its impressive production design, catchy songs, and mumbly, deadpan humor. 4.
