Globus
OK, Hit Box 11 was the first Hit Box collection that I bought back in the day before I started collecting them waaaay later. Of course I was aware of the series and the music from Jeronimo Groovy radio, but the first time I started going into record stores I was 16...and so I nearly missed out on the best part of an era :-/ Oh well, back to the review.I already said in previous reviews how the Hit Box series started out great with the single-digit series, how awesome it was with Hit Box 5 and 9 etc. etc. and how it somehow declined starting from the "New Generation" series (Hit Box 10 to 12). OK, so here we have Hit Box 11, the second in the "New Generation" series, with the "revolutionary" hammer cover and all.First, the tracklist and artists. Yeah, there are definitively a few "big" classic Eurodance names in there, with good tracks too. Alexia, Scooter, 2 Unlimited, 2 Fabiola, Gigi D'Agostino etc. but the rest of the compilation is virtually all made up of -by then- declining or obscure artists, or unusual genre selections. In part, this was caused by FM Records trouble licensing mainstream tracks, which was very evident after Hit Box 10.And this trouble is very evident here: featured artists such as C.B. Milton, Technotronic, D.J. Bobo, Def Dames Dope, Daisy Dee are clearly not in their best moments in this compilation, and this often ends up in irritating track skips. This doesn't mean that they are all bad: there are good tracks by relatively obscure projects such as Tino and Rama (5) and a couple of trance/progressive tracks by Gigi D'Agostino, Mega' Lo Mania and Digidance. The worst moments in the compilation, in my opinion, are the inclusion of Los Del Mar's version of Macarena (if you can't license the "real thing", there's no reason to go with an inferior version of a song that would be out of place from this compilation anyway!), and of the obscure "That C.I.T.A. Feeling", taken from their "Forever Friends" album. OK, so they wanted to throw in a couple of pop tracks in there....it simply backfired.OK, so Hit Box 11 clearly shows signs of decline, there's no point in denying it. The Hit Box series has taken a slippery slope, and it's not coming back. Mind you, there were -and are- much worse compilations out there, but much better ones too. It's really a pity that licensing trouble forced FM records to turn Hit Box into a dumping ground for whatever b-sides, oscure singles and album tracks they could license but it's obvious that's all they had to work with, from a certain point onwards. That's a pity, because in hingsight it makes the compilation appear like a newspaper bundle CD (actually, those could often be better).Despite its problems, it's still salvageable because it's an unusual and original compilation, quite different from more mainstream ones, and despite their licensing problems and strange track choices, FM Records at least managed to keep it somewhat "groovy", even though it's starkingly different from Hit Box 10 in style. The LP edition is so-so: it probably is more collectable than the CD edition due to it being the semi-last Hit Box to ever come on vinyl, but it misses the bonus tracks, which in my opinion add just a tad more value to a barely salvageable compilation. How they could've made this better? Leave the crap tracks (Macarena, CITA feeling) as "bonuses" for the CD version, and move Light My Fire and Close Your Eyes in their place. There, better Hit Box 11 LP right away ;-)
