The Boys of the Lough is a Scottish-Irish Celtic music band active since the 1970s. Their first album, called Boys of the Lough (1972) consisted of Aly Bain (fiddle), Cathal McConnell (flute), Dick Gaughan (vocals and guitar) and Robin Morton (bodhran and vocals). Since the 1960s the Forrest Hill Bar in Edinburgh had been a centre for folk singers and instrumentalists.

Aly Bain (fiddle), Cathal McConnell (flute, whistle, vocals), Dave Richardson (concertina, mandolin, cittern), Tich Richardson (guitar, acoustic bass guitar), with Savourna Stevenson (harp). Recorded in Edinburgh, Scotland. Not indexed here: side 1 track 5 (The Dying Year, Madame Vanoni), first 3 tunes on side 2 track 1 (The Flower of the Quern, The Bonawe Highlanders, Earl Grey), 2nd tune on side 2 track 2 (The Black Cock of Whickham). What Does this Page Tell You? Each Irish tune on this album was identified after a careful, expert comparison of this recorded performance against all other tunes in the Irish Traditional Music Tune Index. The blue column shows just the most established tune title.

Also known as Boys At The Lough, The Boys At The Lough, The Boys From The Lough, The Boys Of The Loch, Buachaillí Ná Locha, Miss Hogan’s. There are 119 recordings of a tune by this name. A tune by this name has been recorded together with Devils Of Dublin (lots of times), The Green Fields Of Rossbeigh (lots of times), The Hunter’s House (a few times), Lucky In Love (a few times) and Miss Monaghan (a few times). I first learned this old standard by carrying most of it home in my head from a Boys of the Lough concert in Boston in 1978. Made sense at the time to learn the tune from its namesake band, and I still like their version as well as any out there. We do this to start a set that goes into Dunmore Lasses and Peeler’s Jacket, with a governor on the whistle player so we can keep it swinging instead of rocketing through at faster-than-fiddle speed.
