Kate Tempest grew up in South-East London, where she still lives.
Kate Tempest performing at Way Out West 2015 in Gothenburg, Sweden. Tempest was born in Westminster, London and grew up in Brockley, South East London, one of five children. At 26, she launched the theatrical spoken word piece Brand New Ancients at the Battersea Arts Centre (2012), to great critical acclaim. The piece also won Tempest the Herald Angel and The Ted Hughes Prize. She released the album Let Them Eat Chaos on 7 October 2016. It debuted at no. 28 on the UK Albums Chart, and was also released in book format (Picador). The album was also nominated for the Mercury Prize, this time in 2017

Hi Kate here! I have made a new album, it’s coming out on the 14th June. I can’t wait for you to hear it. It’s called ’The Book of Traps and Lessons’ and I’ve been working on it slowly for a few years in between tours. I’m going to be performing the album in full at a special show in my beloved Catford, at the Broadway Theatre.
Kate Tempest started out when she was 16, and ten years later she is a published playwright, novelist, poet and respected recording artist. Kate’s work includes Balance, her first album with band Sound of Rum; Everything Speaks in its Own Way a collection of poems, critically acclaimed plays Wasted, Glasshouse and Hopelessly Devoted. Brand New Ancients, epic poem set to a live score and 2nd collection of poetry, Hold Your Own In 2014, the Barclaycard Mercury Music Prize nominated album ‘Everybody Down’ was released and has achieved widespread critical acclaim. Her debut novel, The Bricks That.

Stumbled into this after discovering Kate Tempest's music (which is also well worth seeking out). I do not generally seek out poetry as a genre but if this is what I have been missing, I need to find more. Her work includes Balance, her first album with band Sound of Rum; Everything Speaks in its Own Way her first collection of poems, the critically acclaimed plays Wasted, Glasshouse and Hopelessly Devoted. Brand New Ancients, her self-performed epic poem to a live score, won the Ted Hughes Award 2012 and the Herald Angel at Edinburgh Fringe. It has sold out tours in the UK and New York and is published by Picador. Her second collection of poetry, Hold Your Own, will be published by Picador on October 2014.
Kate Tempest is a pseudonym of Kate Esther Calvert who grew up and remains in South-East London, UK. She started out as a rapper, toured the spoken word circuit for a number of years, and now works as a poet and playwright too. Her work includes 'Balance', her first album with her band Sound of Rum, 'Everything Speaks in its Own Way', her first collection of poems, published on her own imprint Zingaro, which comes with a CD and DVD of live performance; 'GlassHouse', a forum theatre play for Cardboard Citizens; and the plays 'Wasted' (published by Methuen.
