Basehead's debut album, originally released by the typography studio Emigre in 1991 on their music imprint, then reissued for much wider distribution in 1992 by Imago, with some unauthorized samples removed on several songs. Remastered and reissued in 2012 on Michael Ivey's own Colored Folk's Records label.

Originally released by the long-gone Émigré label - an American 4AD wannabe with a design wing and everything - the album is Basehead er Michael Ivey's snoozy vision of "slacker rap," which is organic, lazy, smart, and head over heels in love with beer for some reason. Basehead released its debut album, Play with Toys in 1992 on the small independent label Emigre. Vocalist Michael Ivey recorded much of the album at his home on a four-track with various friends. Assembling a five-member touring band, Ivey toured the United States and Europe, opening for the.

Ivey also distances himself from hardcore rappers by decrying, not promoting, gang-infested ghettos on "Better Days". Even within the multiple socially relevant tracks, Ivey makes a point of pointing out that he is unable to offer a solution to the problems he addresses, because if there are, he doesn't have them. Though a well-placed sample is used to good effect, like Ivey's "buddies" trying to find a "happy song" on the radio and tuning into "Ain't No Sunshine When She's Gone", or "8-Ball Junkie" turning up in a turntablist break.
