The Bunnymen mellowed to a degree for their fourth album, the widely acclaimed Ocean Rain, but all it did was cause them to get weirder. The album is stuffed with queasy midtempo tracks and bizarre orchestration, but it's by no means impenetrable. The strangest song, "Yo Yo Man" limps through skewed verses, building to McCulloch's refrain, "I'm the yo yo man/ Always up and down," which triggers a startling interjection by vigorously bowed strings, percussion and Sergeant's spastic guitar.
It's with the 1980 album Crocodiles we get to know Echo & the Bunnymen, the extravagant goth punk band from Liverpool. Unlike their contemporaries - The Cure, Joy Division, Bauhaus, The Damned and so on, the Bunnymen seemed to be the least serious musicians in the business. It was always about being cool, playing cool music and having fun. "We didn't understand the political, fashionable aspects of punk. The Bunnymen were about trying to be cool. I thought cool wasn't about selling records. We were awkward bastards.

Crocodiles was Echo’s first album and a portentous sign of things to come. Echo was originally a duo, consisting of long time (and still) members, Ian McCulloch and Will Sergeant. The fact that McCulloch and Sergeant worshipped at the altar of the Velvet Underground and The Doors is no surprise to anyone, and Echo combine the psychedelic with the new wave and guitar rock better than anyone. Pictures on My Wall was the first single with the b-side and later . album track, Read it in Books, co-written with Julian Cope. The latter is such a complete song that it’s hard to believe it’s from a rookie band. Who wants love without the looks? indeed. Rescue, the second single from the album surpasses the first.
Echo and the Bunnymen, at least on Crocodiles, display a very interesting mix of psychedelic touches and a harder edged sound that was'nt exactly punk- what was called "new wave" at the time. All the songs are great on Crocodiles, there is no "filler", It has a raw and spontaneous sound that some of their later albums don't.
