This disc contains songs and snippets of dialogue from the Monkees' full-length feature film of the same name. Although their Emmy-winning television program had been cancelled in the spring of 1968, the quartet quickly regrouped and, with the assistance of budding actor/director Jack Nicholson, created a 90-minute surreal cinematic experience - replete with matching soundtrack. Without question, both the movie and album are the most adventurous and in many ways most fulfilling undertaking to have been born of the Monkees' multimedia manufactured project. The music featured on both.
The Best of The Monkees" was the first album I ever owned. It was on cassette tape. My brother and I watched the TV show reruns religiously. 100% Authentic Hasbro LPS!
The album was recorded in several separate sessions around Los Angeles from July 5–25, 1966. Early sessions were produced by the trio of Tommy Boyce, Bobby Hart and Jack Keller; later sessions were produced by Boyce and Hart. Michael Nesmith produced two sessions scheduled around the work done by Boyce, Hart, and Keller. Famously, The Monkees were not permitted by their management to function as a working band for this album, with the group's contributions limited almost entirely to vocal tracks.
Head" was the Monkees sole movie, and for those who have seen the show but not the movie, it is definitely not what you're expecting, although the final episode of the show, "The Frodis Caper" starring Rip Taylor and directed by Micky Dolenz, hints at the surreal and psychedelic direction the band was moving in. "Head" takes the strange new direction of the band way further, and while a commercial flop largely because it was too mature for the Monkees' younger fans and it had an ineffectual yet avant-garde ad campaign, it is now rightly considered a cu. .Without question, the best song on the album, and one of the Monkees' greatest songs ever, is "Circle Sky," a wonderful Nesmith rocker (the most disturbing footage of the film also takes place during the course i. On this release the excellent live version is included as an bonus track.
Head was the last Monkees album to feature Peter Tork until Pool It! in 1987 and the last to feature all four Monkees until 1996's Justus. The soundtrack album intersperses the six full-length songs with bits of Ken Thorne's incidental music, dialogue fragments, and sound effects culled from the film.
