This record is tangible documentation of how Miami's Electro transformed into Miami Bass. It begins like so many other Pretty Tony productions with solids beats, quality vocoders and nice synths. However, at the break down 3/4 of the way through, something new happens--An 808 breakdown. Up to 1986, this was the most anticipated breakdown in Miami's Electro/Bass history and the buzz it created set off an entirely new type of music in the 305. Other Miami producers would seek out this same type of breakdown anticipation, such as Clay D. with "Clay D. Get Funky" and "Boot the Booty." Soon enough, producers, DJs, and fans would ask the most critical question of all: WHO SAID WE HAVE TO WAIT FOR THE BREAKDOWN??? Let's make the whole fuckin' song thump! If you don't own this one, pick it UP!

Kramtronix, your insight into the Florida rap scene is awesome. If you are on facebook then please join the Miami Bass History group and share your knowledge with us. http://www.facebook.com/groups/101025974207/

Jam Pony Express... I did some mixtapes with Slic Vic and Lock Cool Jock back in 2001, actually. Classics! Anyway... The Revalation: The problem with 2 Live Crew's first two releases is that they were still in California when they dropped. While geographical location doesn't necessarily dictate a song's genre, I think it does in this case. Because 2 Live Crew had not even been to Miami yet at the time of this release, I don't think it would qualify as a "Down South Miami Bass-style song." In other words, I don't believe the Miami sound, or what was going on in Miami, had any influence in their music until they released Ghetto Style/Throw the D. As for what the FIRST true Miami Bass or Dirty South records was? Who knows? There were Miami Bass records being made in Miami before the sub-genre had that title. Pretty Tony as well as Maggotron were making records in '83 and early '84 that were technically Miami Bass records, but without bass. The songs had raps as well. So were they Miami Bass? Or Hip-Hop? Obviously, two songs from New York were merged together and formed Miami Bass as were knew it from 1985 to 1995: Afrika Bambaataa's "Planet Rock," which every Miami Bass song got it's tempo and style from, and T La Rock's "It's Yours." Rick Rubin's hard-hitting bass on "It's Yours" sent a shockwave through the state of Florida. Everyone wanted songs that hit like that. But there is one song that is often forgotten that you may want to check out, if you don't already own it. CD III's "Get Tough" from 1983. In my opinion, this was the first record with hard-hitting 808 bass. So if geographical location doesn't matter, this could possibly be the answer.

Thanks, BTW.

Very well said... I admire your music knowledge! The name Frog Legs was given to me back in 1983 when I was in the "Back Street Breakers" in Escondido,Ca. I moved to south east Georgia in 1986. I quickly learned about the Jam Pony Express and all the other down south DJs. I probably have the greatest collection of mix tapes from that time...(Jam Pony Express, Sugar Hill Express, DJ Jelly Bean,etc...! I rarely ever communicate with anyone that understands the "Miami Bass" days. I want your opinion on a song. In 1984 2 Live Crew put out that single called "The Revelation"... the flip side had a song called "2 Live" that was all straight up hard hitting Bass... Is that the very first Down South Miami Bass Style song? I have searched high and low and I believe it is.

All good examples of bass evolution, FrogLegs. From about 1983 to 1986, Pretty Tony was regarded as the premier and most commercial producer of pre-bass Miami and Freestyle in Florida. So to me, and this is all opinion, the fact that he slapped that 808 bass in the breakdown of this tune, it was sort of the offcial signal of the bass arrival. Later that year, 2 Live Crew shredded hundreds of cheaply-made Radio Shack sub-woofers with "Ghetto Bass." Equally, Gigolo Tony's "Smurf Rock" did the same. Real heads know that Amos Larkins is the unsung hero of the Miami Bass sub-genre, but I just think that this tune, along with Tony's reputation and well-distributed records was a defining moment/turning point for the 305.

I liked your review a lot....but I have to ask.. What about MC ADE - Bass Rock Express 1985? 2 Live Crew - Is What We Are(Album) 1986? That entire album was nothing but BASS!
