Among Dmitry Shostakovich 's most enigmatic works, the Symphony No. 93, is open to various interpretations. Despite general acceptance of the immense, brooding first movement as one of the composer's symphonic "requiems," the identification of the brutal second movement as a scathing portrait of Stalin, and the use of the DSCH motive (D-E flat-C-B) as an important autobiographical clue, this work still has not disclosed all its secrets, and renditions can vary widely in emphasis. With his Symphony No. 10, Dmitri Shostakovich emerged from a particularly trying time. It was the first work that Shostakovich composed after the death of his tormentor Joseph Stalin on 5 March 1953. The Tenth Symphony allegedly is about ‘Stalin and the years of Stalin’s regime’. The second movement is intended as a musical portrait of Stalin; it is not a flattering one, with a continuous fortissimo thundering like a steamroller through the entire movement – only four minutes in length

Original release 1966. "S/5644" on sleeve, "S-5644" on labels. First issued by WRC in 1974, [at least] three variants exist. At this stage, reissues from 1975 were usually given a new number beginning with "R-0" (R-01773 would fit the reissue sequence here), which appeared on the label, while the sleeve number went unaltered - this one clearly slipped through the net, as all three issues have "S-5644" on the label. This is the 2nd [possibly 3rd] pressing, with a greenish cover, and a grey back (although the photo has come out mauve). Laminate strip present down the right side of the rear of the sleeve.
